The
following are 10 great techniques that will give any resume a better chance of
getting noticed!
- Various
employer research surveys have proven the most important trait of a top quality resume is that it clearly
identifies your accomplishments and successes, including measurable
values, growth and improvements.
- Visually
appealing – While the content behind the ink will ultimately land you the
job, the appearance of your content on paper has a huge impact on whether
you will get the chance. As resumes
often get a quick once over before a thorough read, you need an appealing,
professional look.
- Use action
verbs. If your resume looks good
and catches the attention of the reader, you want them to maintain focus
and interest with action verbs that tell them what you have done that
interests them (eg. Lead team to 40% better
efficiency in third quarter.)
- Make points
fast! Again, resumes need to be
clear, concise and high impact.
Don’t waste space and distract from your highlights with wasted
words. Strong sentence fragments
and quick hitters are best.
- Keep in mind
that you are selling yourself. Make
your statements as though you want the reader to see your benefit to
them. Show what experiences you
have that would relate to their needs (again, use action verbs).
- Use flawless
writing skills. Grammar, spelling,
and generally proper writing will never be more important. Don’t rely on ‘spelling and grammar’
computer checks. Use my highly qualified
writing/editing abilities – Perfect 6 on GMAT writing assessment!
- Use proper white
space. While many experts recommend
maintaining a one page resume, appearance and readability are as
important. In fact, I prefer a
2-page professional look versus a one page, crammed version. Proper spacing and formatting looks
professional, readable, and not overwhelming at first glance.
- Don’t use
graphics or tricks. Most employers
have no interest in ‘pretty’ resumes.
They want professional, visually clean, but to the point resumes.
- Use the resume
to highlight qualities and selling points.
Never put self-defeating material like why you were fired from your
last job.
- Ask yourself,
is your resume getting you interviews?
